Boasting an integrated copier, fax machine, and scanner in one small device, the HP Officejet 4212 is aimed at the small offices looking for an affordable multifunctional solution. The printer is significantly faster than other models, but problems like incompatibility with newer operating systems the limited warranty make it outdated.

Design

The HP Officejet 4212 looks a lot like an oversized fax machine and weighs 5.5 kg. It can take up a little too much space when in use – certainly more than other printers do. HP gave this model a bigger memory (8MB) and lower energy consumption (a maximum of 50 watts), therefore meeting the Energy Star running efficiency requirements. The HP Officejet 4212 uses drop-on-demand thermal inkjet technology for printing.

Advantages

The duty cycle of 1,500 pages per month makes the HP Officejet 4212 a slightly improved version of its predecessors from the similar HP Officejet line. It is also faster, with a print speed of 14 ppm in black and 10 ppm in colour, and a maximum of 4800x1200 dpi resolution. The HP PhotoREt III is supported by the HP Officejet 4212; it lets users improve the quality of their pictures before printing. The fax feature can transmit messages at up to 36.6 Kbps.

Disadvantages

Expect incompatibility issues if you upgrade your computer to Windows 7. HP's Instant Share feature is not available on the HP Officejet 4212, and post-warranty support is limited. The scanner's 600x1200 dpi resolution is not good enough if you require accurate colours.
