  • I have an HP Officejet 6500 printer and over the last few days it's been playing up. To start with it would not print in black and I had to print every thing in blue. Now, it won't print anything at all and when I do a test page everything prints except the black. Is there anything else you can advise I do with it to resolve the problem? The printer is about eighteen months old. Many thanks, Teresa.

Black printing with HP Officejet 6500

Thank you for your enquiry, do you have a black cartridge installed and does it have ink in it? If so, it may be faulty or not being read by the printer. If this is the case please try the following steps:

Please switch off your printer at the mains and leave off for 5-10 minutes, in the meantime please remove the cartridge that is giving the error message and gently wipe the chip on the cartridge with a dry, lint free cloth to remove any dust or finger prints that may be restricting the cartridge from being read by your printer.

When your printer has been switched off for at least 5 minutes please turn back on and allow to fully re-boot, then re-install the cartridge and try to print.

If your black cartridge is empty or missing the printer will not print.

  • Kindly explain to me the difference between HP920 and HP920XL? It's very urgent please.

    Differences between Officejet 6500 cartridges

The HP 920XL ink cartridges are available in all colours for your printer (black, cyan, magenta and yellow) and are high capacity cartridges. The HP 920 ink cartridge comes in black only. The only difference between the HP 920 and HP 920XL black cartridges is that the 920XL contains more ink, hence the difference in price. You can use either a HP 920 or HP 920XL black cartridge in your Officejet 6500 All-in-One printer depending on how much ink you intend to use.

  • I want to use the 920 XL cartridges from my HP Officejet 6500 in a HP Photosmart 5520e which seem to require 364XL . Is the number / prefix just about capacity?

    Officejet 6500 cartridge numbers

The number of the cartridge is essential to whether or not it works in your printer e.g. 920, 364. The prefix of XL only indicates that the cartridge is of high capacity. The HP 920XL cartridge that works in your Officejet 6500 printer isn't compatible with the HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One printer. You must use a HP 364XL black cartridge in the Photosmart 5520. HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One Printer Review

Expert review of the HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One printer

Our Verdict:

The HP OfficeJet 6500 is a Small Office, Home Office (SOHO) multifunction printer. With lightning quick printing times and an array of functions, this versatile printer is the perfect choice for anyone serious about printing. The 6500 comes with Wi-Fi and Ethernet for superfast network printing and the built-in memory card reader even allows you to bypass the computer altogether.

HP have kept the 6500 fairly compact - impressive when you consider the number of features they have crammed inside it. The control panel on the front of the printer is fairly small, but is well-laid out with individual function buttons, there's also a full number pad for faxing. Under the control panel is the machine's only paper tray, which can hold up to 250 sheets. The HP 6500 inkjet printer also comes with two memory card slots, an Ethernet port and built in Wi-Fi.

For mid-range printer, the HP OfficeJet 6500 has a high-spec. And unlike other small office all-in-ones on the market, the 6500 actually offers functions that go hand in hand with the corporate world, including an Automatic Document Feeder and duplex printing. The running costs are fairly low, with HP claiming the inkjet printer to be 40% cheaper than a laser equivalent.

It would be nice to see the option to connect a USB key to the printer, this is more useful then memory cards in an office based setting, where users may wish to print, scan or copy a document directly from their pen drive. The HP 6500 inkjet printer could also benefit from a larger paper input tray as 250 sheets can quickly go in a small office environment.
