  • I get half way through a colour cartridge on my HP Photosmart C4180, when the printer stops and tells me to remove and check colour cartridge, which I do on a regular basis. I fit a new one and the same thing occurs. I have checked the printer documentation eg. troubleshooting etc. but to know avail. Any ideas?

    Photosmart C4180 colour printing error

When there is an error message stating to "remove and check" a cartridge, we would recommend removing the cartridge and switching the printer off. Leave it off for a few minutes and wipe the chip on the cartridge with a dry, lint cloth to remove any dust or fingerprints that could prevent it being read. If the error message is still coming up, it would suggest a faulty cartridge that needs replacing. However, if the replacement is doing the same thing it does sound like a problem with the printer. I would suggest contacting HP, even if your printer is no longer under warranty as they should be able to help further with this issue.

  • Can I use a HP 350 black and a HP 351 colour cartridge in my C4180 Photosmart printer?

    Ink cartridges for Photosmart C4180

Unfortunately, the HP 350 and 351 cartridges are not compatible with your printer. Provided the printer was purchased in the UK the cartridges you need for the Photosmart C4180 are the HP 337 black and the HP 343 colour cartridges. • I replaced the black and am sure the colour cartridge still has more ink in it yet I keep getting an error message to 'remove & check colour cartridge'. I removed the colour cartridge, shook it, shut down the printer for 10 minutes but keep getting the same message. Any suggestions?

    HP C4180 colour ink cartridge

It may be that the cartridge is now reading as empty. The colour cartridge that your printer takes is a tri-colour cartridge, so if one of the three colours in the cartridge has run out, the cartridge will stop working even if some of the remaining colours are still there. This may be why you can still feel ink in the cartridge.

  • Will the cartridges you list here for the HP Photosmart C4180 also fit my printer which is the Photosmart C4180 All-in-One? It doesn't say "All-in-One" on the list. Thank you for your help.

    Photosmart C4180 All-in-One cartridges

Yes, the Photosmart C4180 printer we list is the same model although it is sometimes referred to as the C4180 All-in-One printer.

  • There's no way I'm getting the number of pages you list for the black HP 337 (400 pages) and colour HP 343 (330 pages). I don't even get half of that! Why is that?

    Photosmart C4180 ink cartridge capacities

The duty cycles on our website are based on 5% coverage. This is roughly the equivalent of 5 lines of text on an A4 page. Printing any more than this will significantly reduce the amount of pages the cartridges will produce.

  • I'm about to replace the ink cartridges in my HP C4180 printer after using the previous ones for two years. I'm considering buying more than one. Does the ink or cartridge deteriorate in storage?

Photosmart C4180 ink storage and expiry

Cartridges normally do have expiry dates on them (printed on the box). The HP Photosmart C4180 ink cartridges should last approximately 1-2 years without being opened if they're stored in the right conditions in a cool, dry environment.

  • I have a HP Photosmart C4180 printer and the ink number on the cartridges is 336 for black and 342 for colour. Why are you saying that the numbers should be black 337 and colour 343? Have I been using the wrong cartridges? Thanks Clive.

    HP C4180 ink cartridge compatibility

Not necessarily. The HP Photosmart C4180 printer uses a HP 337 black ink cartridge and either a HP 342 light user colour cartridge or a HP 343 standard capacity colour cartridge as listed above. For more information please see: https://h30042.www3.hp.com/SureSupply/#3

  • I use an HP Photosmart C4180 All-in-One printer with HP 337 and 343 ink cartridges. Do I require an additional ink cartridge to print colour photos? If "yes", what number cartridge do I require and do you sell them? Many thanks, N.C.M.

Photo colour cartridge for HP C4180

You can use an optional HP 348 photo colour ink cartridge in the HP Photosmart C4180 printer in order to enhance the quality of output on colour photo prints. The HP 348 photo colour ink cartridge is optional and is used in the black ink slot in your printer to work alongside the tri-colour cartridge. HP Photosmart C4180 Printer Review

Expert review of the HP Photosmart C4180 printer

Our Verdict:

The Photosmart C4180 all-in-one device is marketed by HP as a home office printer. The twin-cartridge inkjet with built in flatbed scanner and copier can handle a multitude of tasks and thanks to improved plug and print functionality, you can even print without having to turn on your PC. If you are looking for a printer that prints at a reasonable resolution then the C4180 is fine. However, if you're looking for professional photographic quality then look at some of the higher-end models in the Photosmart range.

HP have rolled out the same design across the entire Photosmart range, and the C4180 is no exception to the rule. The build quality is fantastic and the white and grey gloss finish looks superb. There is a small LCD display on the top of the printer, navigating the menu is easy and the function buttons are fairly intuitive - you can copy, scan and print at the click of a button. There are also two memory cards slots on the side. The paper input tray can hold 100 sheets which is fairly large; however there is no dedicated output tray which will pose a problem if you print large documents. The printer has a single USB port at the rear for connection to a PC or laptop. Installing new HP C4180 cartridges is easy and requires no technical skill.

The HP Photosmart C4180 printer does a fairly reasonable job of printing text and colour graphics - quality and speed is impressive for an inkjet. The scanner and copier produced accurate reproductions although this did take longer than the quoted 30 pages per minute and was nearer to 10 pages per minute. The C4180 is ultra-compatible and will connect with the majority of memory cards (Compact Flash, Memory Stick, MMC and SD).

The HP C4180 printer doesn't really excel in any one department; it's an average all-rounder that will do an OK job at most things. Photographic printing is one area which is below par, the quality isn't great and print speeds are sluggish. The printer could also benefit with additional networking capabilities which would open it up to households with more than one computer.
