Brother MFC-9550 Printer Review

Expert review of the Brother MFC-9550 printer

Our Verdict:

This multifunction printer is aimed at home offices because of its compact footprint and ample paper capacity. Users can appreciate the digital copy and TWAIN-compliant scanner of the Brother MFC-9550 mono multifunction printer so they won't have to buy separate devices anymore, and the integration of 14.4Kbps fax makes it a reliable communications centre, too. However, the MFC-9550 laser printer lacks many important features, which could compromise productivity and reliability.

Design

The boxy device stands out because of its rugged appearance and the busy control panel with a small monochrome display screen. With a desktop form factor that measures 9.8 inches tall, 18 inches wide, and 13.1 inches deep, it can fit most standard desktops, though it needs a steady surface because it weighs 8.48Kg. The Brother MFC-9550 desktop laser printer can be connected to a computer via the parallel port, and it uses 2MB of RAM to run. An RJ-11 connection is required by the fax machine.

Advantages

The Brother MFC-9550 mono laser printer prints text documents sharply in 600dpi. It supports PCL 4 simulation, as well as TrueType and bitmapped fonts. The integrated eight-bit sheetfed scanner supports 256 levels of grey, with versatile resolutions at 200x400dpi or 600x600dpi. The digital copier of the Brother MFC9550 multifunction printer has document enlargement and reduction features. A telephone handset is included. Compatible Brother MFC9550 cartridges help to drive down costs.

Disadvantages

Colour scanning and printing as well as networking are absent in the Brother MFC 9550. It is noisy and slow, with the maximum print speed quoted at six pages per minute only. The outdated connection can cause data transfer to lag or become sluggish. The Brother MFC-9550 MFP does not print pictures and graphics well. There are no options to further expand the paper capacity and the memory. The machine is not compatible with Mac and Linux systems. Media handling and fax functions are very limited.
