Once again, Samsung has decided to forgo an attempt to reinvent the wheel and stuck to the basics with their ML-3051N. This printer has nearly an identical body to dozens of rival models from Oki to Lexmark. This machine is Samsung's attempt to build a high quality, high quantity mono laser printer that can perform all of the functions of its competitor quicker and cheaper. Along with the included networking options, this printer is a good choice for a busy home office or smaller business.
The ML-3051N does in fact have the exact casing as some of the rivals with the Samsung insignia being the only recognizable difference. With a 250 input tray, 50 sheet output well, and no options for faxing or scanning, the ML-3051N definitely straddles the line of what a home office could afford and what a small business may need. It does come standard with full networking capabilities including a USB, Ethernet, and parallel ports along the back. The face opens up to reveal the black Samsung ML-3051N toner cartridges which can come in either standard, or high-yield variations. The provided software is the easiest way to manipulate this printer as the control panel only houses a small LCD display, a few optional buttons, and a handful of LED warning lights.
The printer can push near 20 pages per minute of plain text with the first print coming out in just under 6 seconds depending on the network setup. As with many of the single-purpose mono laser printers, the text quality is also phenomenal. The Samsung ML-3051N cartridges are very reasonably priced and make it one of the cheapest machines to maintain in this price range. Along with the network compatibility and options for increasing the paper load, this printer is a great option for a small home office which needs few frills and a good price.
Samsung actually markets this printer to the consumer with a busy home office or very small business. Straddling this line is the major disadvantage of the ML-3051N. The speed and price may be a bit high for any family or home needing a basic printer, while the lack of features means that very few businesses will find themselves able to grow with this machine.
