Our Verdict:

The HP DesignJet Z5400 is a thermal inkjet postscript e-printer. It produces outstanding results for posters, banners, exhibition graphics and much more. However, the top printing quality of this machine comes at the cost of its printing speed. This will be unsuitable for an environment that needs to churn out prints on demand, but will be a useful addition to design or engineering firms that want to take control of the whole design process. The dual-roll feed will save time, and the large memory makes it ideal for busy workplaces that want to improve efficiency.

Design

The HP DesignJet Z5400’s dimensions are 193cm x71cm x 76cm. There are six individual HP DesignJet Z5400 ink cartridges, including three different shades of black alongside the standard cyan, magenta and yellow to bring a wide gamut of colour to both black and white and colour prints. It can be loaded with two rolls of paper with an automatic switch as soon as one is empty. It is enabled with HP ePrint and can print from USB, email and the internet.

Advantages

The HP Z5400 has a dual-roll feed, giving it double the printing time before needing to refill. The wide size allows it to support rolls of up to 1,118mm. The printing resolution is very high at 2400 x 1200 dpi, and the six ink cartridges provide a superb range of colours. It utilises HP’s Smart Drop Technology to correct errors and bring a professional standard to prints of fine art quality, while reducing ink wastage. With a 320GB hard drive, it can handle lengthy print jobs, even if the computer is disconnected.

Disadvantages

The HP DesignJet Z5400 prints very slowly. Even at draft speeds, it will print just 53 square metres per hour. The pigment-based inks make it unsuitable for printing banners that might be used outdoors. This printer does not have a copy or scanning function.
