I've tried compatible toners but, while ok for text, they fall short for pictures & laser photo paper - so I use the original Brother cartridges. One moan is of course the price; why isn't there a credit for returning empties which seems more like a cheap way to add some more ink then resell rather than 'saving the earth'! Service from Cartridge Save is good as usual with next day delivery.
