Brother Fax-1940CN Printer Review

Expert review of the Brother Fax-1940CN printer

Our Verdict:
star
star-filled

The Brother Fax-1940CN colour inkjet plain paper fax machine is aimed at users who need a speedier and more efficient fax machine for their small business or home office. The Brother Fax-1940CN printer boasts a 4-cartridge ink system, colour fax, an answering machine, and a USB interface, along with networking features, which allows it to be shared by workgroups. However, its overall construction is quite flimsy.

Design

With an understated frame that measures 15.3 inches wide, 11 inches tall, and 20.7 inches deep, the Brother Fax-1940CN is able to fit into cramped desktops. The Fax-1940CN inkjet printer weighs approximately 5.7kg, is integrated with colour inkjet print technology, and runs on 16MB of memory. The Brother Fax-1940CN also comes with a 20-page automatic document feeder on top and a telephone handset on the left-hand side. The centrepiece is the control panel with a 1-line, 16-character display screen.

Advantages

It is an all-in-one unit with network-friendly features and a compact design, which fits the needs of small offices. The network ready Brother Fax-1940CN supports colour fax and transmits messages fast with a super G3-compatible 33.6Kbps modem. The Brother 1940CN fax machine comes with full telephony features including a handset, a speaker phone, voice messaging with up to 29 minutes of recorded messages, and telephone/fax switch.

Disadvantages

Some users complained about being unable to send or receive faxes from overseas, and they cannot hang-up or cancel the transmission when the 'comm error' message appears. The flimsy construction of the paper input tray is another problem in the Brother Fax-1940CN, as well as the inability to use the printer while connected to the network. The device lacks the proper drivers for installation and users need to go online and download the necessary ones themselves. Setting up the Brother 1940CN in a network is also difficult. The busy control panel makes the device difficult to configure especially for first-timers.
