It may come as a surprise to many that it is not just in the field of high definition cameras that Canon is doing exceedingly well. Building on the momentum of this 70 year old Japanese company, their personal printers are causing quite a bit of stir. Their LBP-2900 laser printer is cheap, simple, quick, and quiet. There is not much more than anyone could really ask of their personal office printer in this day and age.
The design of the LBP-2900 could not be more simple. This printer is not much larger than a bread maker and could fit on even the smallest of desks. When all the trays are folded in, the LBP-2900 is only around 33 cm at its longest point and under 3 kg. There is a single power button along the top right hand side with a two LED lights for power and jams. The face of the printer folds down to reveal the 150 sheet input tray while the top of the printer folds up to house the output tray which will have trouble with anything over 50 or 75 sheets. The input is simple with only a USB port at the rear next to the power cable. The same hatch that opens to reveal input sheet tray also allows access to the specialty Canon LBP-2900 toner cartridge.
For a small, single function home printer this is exactly what anyone will ever need. It prints an average of 12 pages per minute with a print quality of 600 x 600 dots per inch. One feature that many companies overlook is the noise level of a machine, and the LBP-2900 definitely is one of the quietest on the market. The first print speed is also a major bonus. Canon has gotten this time down to just under 10 seconds while comparable printers can take up to 45 seconds. Installation of a replacement Canon LBP-2900 toner is easy.
This printer serves the needs that most will need when making prints at home, but nothing more. There are no options for a wireless adapter, an increased paper input tray, expanded memory, faxing, or scanning. It is simply a monochrome laser printer. Another quirk is the input tray which has to be completely emptied of all sheets to fold back into the machine. Along with the lack of a dust cover, it can become a nuisance to continually load and unload sheets into the printer for storage.
