      The "High Capacity Black HP 20" arrived from CartridgeSave.
      But it hardly worked.

      The 640c appeared reluctant to recognise the new cartridge,
      so I cleaned the cartridge's contacts with a cleaning block.

      The jets of the new cartridge appeared to have dried out,
      although there was some temporary improvement after two
      treatments with hot water.

      All attempts to print with the new black cartridge stopped in
      about the first inch of the page.

Our Verdict:

The HP Fax 1020 is a budget-friendly choice integrated with the company's signature inkjet print engine for offices that need a high-quality plain paper fax machine. The 1020 fax machine can be used as a copier, too. However, the Hewlett Packard Fax 1020 inkjet printer can be overwhelming to operate because of the busy control panel, and the low monthly duty cycle makes it inefficient for demanding requirements.

Design

Weighing approximately 5Kg, the HP 1020 Fax printer is fairly compact for the standard desktop and doesn't require much installation space. The straightforward and understated design features a 100-sheet input tray and a 20-sheet document feeder on top, adjacent to the busy control panel that covers most of the front centre area. The output paper slot doesn't have an actual tray, but a wire paper catcher can be attached for more convenience. The HP Fax 1020 series printer uses HP's thermal inkjet technology.

Advantages

The HP Fax 1020 is a reliable communications device with a corded handset and plain paper faxing in monochrome. The Fax 1020 is G3-compatible for added speed in receiving and transmitting faxes. The total memory capacity is good for 65 pages and other features include fax forwarding, auto-redial, and DRPD (distinctive ring pattern). The document feeder of the HP 1020 inkjet fax machine can handle 20 sheets. The HP Fax 1020 fax printer is easily maintained by installing new black HP 1020 fax cartridges. Users can also get a compatible black HP Fax-1020 cartridge to save money.

Disadvantages

The monthly duty cycle is only 1,750 pages, and the display screen is too small. The HP Fax 1020 is notably slow, with copy speeds of up to 1.5ppm only. Users should not expect stellar output because of the limited 300x300dpi copy resolution. The 14.4Kbps fax modem is outdated and the fax resolutions of the HP Fax 1020 are only between 203x98dpi and 203x196dpi.
